How to Compare SOC 2 Audit Firms Before Signing a Contract

A founder in Bengaluru recently described getting three SOC 2 quotes for the same scope, the same trust service criteria, and the same company size, yet the numbers differed by nearly three times, with none of the firms explaining why. This is a common experience for Indian SMEs, startups, and enterprises shopping for a SOC 2 audit firm for the first time, and it's exactly why comparing proposals properly, rather than just comparing the bottom-line number, matters so much before anyone signs anything.

Ask what's actually included in the price quoted

The first thing to check isn't the price itself but what sits inside it. Some firms quote only the audit fee and treat readiness assessment, policy drafting, and evidence review as separate add-ons billed later. Others bundle everything into one number upfront. Two quotes that look wildly different on the surface might actually reflect the same total scope of work, just split differently. Before comparing prices side by side, get a written breakdown of exactly what each firm's number covers, so the comparison is apples to apples rather than a guess.

Confirm who actually signs the report

Only a licensed CPA firm registered in the United States can issue a valid SOC 2 report. Many companies offering soc 2 compliance services in India operate as readiness consultants or automation partners, coordinating with a CPA firm behind the scenes to produce the final report. This is a completely normal and widely used model, but it needs to be transparent. Ask directly which entity signs the report and verify that firm's CPA licensing before moving forward, rather than assuming it based on the sales conversation.

Check how the Type 1 versus Type 2 decision is handled

A firm worth signing with should walk through the difference between a Type 1 report, which assesses whether controls are designed properly at a single point in time, and a Type 2 report, which evaluates whether those controls actually functioned effectively over an observation period of several months. A firm that pushes every client toward Type 2 by default, regardless of what their customers are actually requesting, may be optimizing for a bigger invoice rather than what the business genuinely needs right now.

Key questions worth asking every firm before signing

  • Does the quoted price include readiness assessment and remediation support, or are these billed separately later?
  • Which CPA firm signs the final report, and can their licensing be independently verified?
  • How was the Type 1 or Type 2 recommendation decided, and is it based on actual customer requests?
  • What does the scoping process look like, and how many discovery questions were asked before pricing was given?
  • Can they provide references from clients of a similar size and industry?
  • What is the realistic total timeline, from readiness through final report delivery?

Look at how scoping conversations go

During the sales process, pay attention to whether the firm asks detailed questions about the business before quoting, or whether they hand over a generic number after a quick call. A firm that asks about infrastructure, employee count, existing policies, subprocessors, and which trust service criteria customers are requesting is scoping the engagement properly. A firm that skips straight to pricing without this groundwork often ends up requesting scope changes midway through the audit, which tends to increase costs and stretch timelines well beyond what was originally promised.

Review the readiness process specifically

The strongest engagements include a proper readiness phase before formal evidence collection begins, where gaps in policies, access controls, or logging get identified and fixed early. Ask each firm how this phase is structured, how long it typically takes for a company of similar size, and whether it's included in the quoted price or billed as an extra. Firms that treat readiness as an afterthought, or skip it entirely to move faster to the audit, often produce reports with more exceptions and longer remediation cycles later.

Compare timelines honestly, not just costs

Two firms quoting similar prices can still differ significantly in how long the engagement takes. Ask for a realistic timeline covering the readiness phase, evidence collection window for Type 2 reports, and final reporting stage. A firm promising an unusually fast turnaround for a Type 2 report, which by nature requires months of evidence, is either scoping something differently than expected or setting expectations that won't hold up once the engagement is underway.

The company that takes the time to compare these specifics, rather than just the number at the bottom of the proposal, tends to end up with an audit that runs smoothly, a report that holds up under an enterprise client's scrutiny, and far fewer surprises along the way.
