Several factors can alter the effective tongue weight on the tow bar. The distribution of cargo within the trailer is the primary factor; loading heavy items behind the trailer axle will significantly reduce tongue weight, increasing sway risk, whereas placing them too far forward will increase it. How much the tow bar extends from the vehicle can also act as a lever, affecting the load on the rear axle.
