7-Point Playbook Checklist: Win Close Games
Most players pick a playbook based on their favorite team or the menu screen. At a competitive level, that decision is costing you games before you take a snap. A playbook isn't a collection of plays—it’s a system of answers to every defensive problem. Over years of high-level play, I’ve built a seven-point checklist I run through every time I evaluate a playbook. Here’s how I build a system that wins close games.
The Pressure-Proof Foundation
Nothing matters if I can’t answer a Cover 0 mid blitz or pinch buck 0. Heavy blitzes are designed to overwhelm before you process the field, but they can turn into one-play touchdowns if you’re prepared. I need QB zone runs, outside zone, RPO Read Y Flat, sharp quick-cutting stock routes, and mesh concepts. Mesh is especially underrated here: crossing routes create natural picks that make defenders run into each other, opening up big gains. The remaining pressure answers (draws, screens, HB flats) follow the same logic—if this first layer isn’t solid, the rest of the playbook is irrelevant.
Red Zone Efficiency That Decides Games
Inside the 20, settling for three is a swing that compounds over four quarters. I need high-percentage touchdown plays, not just yardage. QB Zone from Trips TE (Alabama’s playbook) has been a reliable red zone weapon for two years. RPOs like Read Y Flat from Gun Y Off Trips Nasty were nearly automatic in CFB 25. CFB 26 added the ability to hot-route RPOs, making them even harder to defend. Going into CFB 27, a solid RPO in your red zone package is non-negotiable.
Built-In Routes That Hot Routes Can’t Touch
Hot routes and stock routes run differently—different stems, breaks, and cut sharpness. I prioritize stock sharp corners and sharp posts. The corner on Corner Strike from Bunch Str Offset and the post on Mesh Post from Gun Cluster kill man coverage consistently. Even when the opponent shades coverage correctly, these routes still get open. They also sit behind zone coverage when you stem to the right depth pre-snap. You cannot replicate that precision with a hot route, so I need plays that have these routes built in.
A Power Play for Soft Coverage
When my opponent drops into Cover 3 or Cover 4 with no adjustments, I need a play that punishes them immediately. Y Sail from Normal Y Off Close and Flood from Gun Bunch Strong Offset both feature fade routes that attack the gap between the corner and safety in deep thirds. That seam is a design flaw in zone coverage, and the right fade exploits it. Call the play, read the coverage, let the route do the work.
Play Action as a Tactical Counter
Quick Jump on pass rushers can wreck your timing, but play action cancels that ability entirely. It resets the engagement and gives your line a better chance. I look for play-action plays with strong built-in post routes—Normal Y Off Close PA Snag and Y Off Trips Nasty PA Double Post both check that box. From there, I can hot-route the rest of the receivers based on coverage. This becomes critical late in games when rushers upgrade to Platinum or Heisman level. Play action is a built-in ability counter that separates good players from great ones.
Know Your Formations, Know Your Run
I know I’m most comfortable in compressed bunch sets: Gun Bunch TE, Gun Bunch Str Offset, Gun Bunch X Nasty. 3x1 formations simplify pre-snap reads and post-snap progressions. I don’t build my playbook around 2x2 sets because that’s not my strength. Self-awareness makes me a better competitor. Once I pick two or three formations I can audible between, I make sure each has at least four viable plays, including one solid run. If my opponent can guess the play by formation, I’ve lost the mental battle.
A purposeful run game does three things: keeps opponents honest (so your line can settle), improves your passing game (releases, time, protection), and controls the clock. Picking up 4–5 yards on first down turns 3rd-and-long into 3rd-and-short. That’s a completely different ballgame.
The Final Count: 20 Right Plays
I’m not looking for 500 plays. I want about 20 that collectively cover blitz answers, red zone touchdowns, irreplicable routes, a soft-coverage power play, play-action counters, formation comfort, and a purposeful run game. Check all seven boxes, and you have a playbook built to compete. What’s on your checklist heading into CFB 27? Drop it in the comments—I’d love to see how top players are building their systems.
